Introduction to Gymnastics

Course details:

Ryan Bradley, founder of RB Gym and Sport, which is dedicated to improving gymnastics education in schools leads this course.

Ryan discusses tailored warm-ups and cool-downs for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 gymnastics lessons. Active and varied warm-ups are emphasised to nurture fundamental movements, with themed examples like pirate play. Flexibility and low-intensity cool-downs for comprehension assessment are highlighted, along with purposeful warm-ups aligned with lesson objectives for Key Stage 2.

Delving into "Floor Work", Ryan explores fundamental gymnastics shapes and techniques. Detailed instructions and variations accommodate different abilities, with a focus on integrating basic travels into warm-ups and key techniques for jumps off vaults. Teaching points for rolls ensure safe learning experiences.

Moving into sequencing, coordinated performances of skills for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 are explored. Strategies for individual routines and varied sequences are offered, with personalised learning and structured transitions.

Finally, Ryan covers planning and assessment, discussing effective lesson planning, recommending a minimum of 12 weeks for Key Stage 1 and two half terms for Key Stage 2. Emphasis is placed on progression, safety, and formative and summative assessment techniques.
